The Akweya people are the inhabitants of the Akpa District in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State of Nigeria. The people call themselves Akweya (sons of Akwu) while the non-indigenes call them Akpa, a distortion of the word meaning people from Apa.
Akpa has been the name officially used by the government since 1950 to date. The two generic names can be used interchangeably to mean the people, the language and their land.
The district has a common border with the Otukpo district in the north, Oglewu in Ohimini in the northwest, Edumoga in Okpokwu to the west, Obi-Ito-Igede to the east and the Ufia-Utonkon in Ado, to the south. Akweya territory is a level land which is only dotted in some areas with hills around Odonto-Adim, Ilo, Angbo, Otobi, Egbla, and Atito-Adankari.
The two main vegetations are the deciduous rain forest belt that clothe the River Ohmenyi (R. Okpokwu) and the River Ogbadibo, which is the main tributary. The forest is flanked on the east and west banks by large expanse of guinea savannah grassland. The entire district is almost bisected by the Ohmenyi river which runs from Aturukpo town on the northeast through the towns of Otobi, Egbla, Omajaga, Adim, Ejor, Ogyoma and drains away down to the Oyongo river south eastwards.
This is very beautiful and educating....More reese to your elbow...May God bless AKWEYA!!!
ReplyDeleteGood description. The Akweya people can also be found in cross river state and plateau state. Also has distance cousins in south Africa.
ReplyDeleteDo you mind expantiating on the relationship between Akweya and the places mentioned? It will be a great source of knowledge.
DeleteThe legend Mr Okenyodo monumental works on Akweya Lanmguage is remarkable. The son has continued from where the father stopped. Akweya linguists are to keep the ball rolling so that the language could structurally grow and survive. Though Akweya Akpa ia a dialect of Idoma but it can become an independent language with time.
DeleteThanks, Ogbogo. We need to do our best for future generations.
DeleteThanks for educating the young generation. Long live AKWEYA, long live the publisher.. Mr Odoh, God bless u.

ReplyDeleteMr. Diego, greetings to you, please we still need more information about where the Akweya nation Originated from and how we managed to settled down where we are today, this information needs to be updated more again and again, because if we don't know where we come from where we are going to will not be known. My father once told me that there was a late Rev. Father O'brain who wrote a very rich historical background about Akwayaland and their origination and how we came to existence. That documents must be somewhere, I will ask my father if he has more information about this and will try to make it available thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe practice of Islam by whether majority or minority of Akweya is not true, we don't even have single mosque or Islam in our land, one can hardly find an house in Akweya land let alone for practicing Islamic religion, please who ever that wrote that history should esponge that from it.

ReplyDeleteGod will bless us in Jesus name
ReplyDeleteI will first of all say a very big thank you to the AkweyaTv team for taken time out to carry out this great research, and in dishing out this lucid post to educate us the readers of both Akweya and other tribes who has shown interest to the Akweya history.
ReplyDeleteHowever Sir, just as many have commented here, and have been asking diverse questions to help elaborate their knowledge concerning the proper history of the Akweya people. In this regards Sir, I want to also join the many that have ask questions here that, can you build on the existing hint, shared here by some people about the Akweyas in the other side of Cross River state in Ogoja to be precise. And can you also dig deep to fetch out an accurate account on how the Akweya people migrated, and where the migtated from. And how the are now found in two states in Nigeria. I think with this few questions i will purse and wait for you enviable answers, that will help quench the taste of what we anticipate to know about the rich history, culture and traditions of the great Akweya nation.
And to my earliest question of the traditional attire. Please, does Akweya has its own cultural attire for simple identification like the rest tribe in Benue State.
Thank you.
